A sandbox environment is a testing environment that allows you to test the API without affecting your live systems.
NOWPayments offers a sandbox API where users can test everything without sending real money by specifying the ‘case’ parameter in the create payment request and getting notifications for each of the presented cases.
To get started with testing NOWPayments’ API, users need to sign up at<a href="http://account-sandbox.nowpayments.io/"> account-sandbox.nowpayments.io</a> and specify their outcome wallet. They also need to generate an API key that will enable them to authenticate with the API. NOWPayments provides comprehensive API documentation that outlines all the available endpoints and parameters that users can use to interact with the API.
In the sandbox environment, users don’t need to send any funds to test the API. They can simply specify the ‘case’ parameter in the create payment request and get notifications for each of the presented cases. Users can then check the payment status or wait for an instant payment notification (IPN) request to be sent to their specified callback URL.

To start, they need to check if the payout address is valid by using the POST Validate address endpoint. Once validated, a withdrawal request can be created using the POST Create payout endpoint. Developers must verify their payout using 2FA, which can be automated through their code by implementing the OTP generation library.

With the Custody API, developers can create deposit accounts for their users, generate payments or deposits for topping up the account balance, and withdraw funds from it. To create an account for a user, developers can use the POST method with a unique user identifier not exceeding 30 characters.

It’s been a few weeks since Consensus and the announcements surrounding the BOS. Nevertheless, many tend to still think of the BOS as a layer that other chains can use as the interface for user interactions.
While the front end is the first touchpoint for anyone getting into crypto, the BOS is an entire full Open Web stack with all the functionalities you’d expect. With this post, we expand on NEARWEEK’s <a href="https://medium.com/nearprotocol/introducing-the-blockchain-operating-system-bos-8004345d02ba">introduction to the blockchain operating system (BOS)</a> to explain exactly what the BOS entails and why dismissing it as merely a decentralised frontend is short-sighted.
<h3>Why the BOS?</h3>
We were lucky enough to hear Illia talk about BOS in San Francisco. Among other things, Illia shared why NEAR was created and how this all ties back to the BOS. He explained that from the very early stages, the main driver behind NEAR was the idea of building the Open Web.
Open Web: users own their identity, assets, data, and the decision-making power over what happens to them.
The BOS is an evolution of NEAR that facilitates the Opeb Web by creating a layer where people can discover Open Web-related experiences without giving up on their sovereignty.

The BOS consists of various layers:
Blockchain &amp; smart contracts: These sit at the bottom of the stack. Currently, the BOS can already interact with EVM chains, L2s, and NEAR. This will expand to support Cosmos, Solana, and other native chains.
Data Platform Layer / Middleware: As with the cream in Oreos, the middleware ensures that everything sticks together. This layer sits between the chain and components and connects the activities in the front-end with actual on-chain activity. Moreover, middleware provides easy access to on-chain data and facilitates search and recovery functionality through its aggregation mechanism — something that is much needed Web3.
Discovery: This is the layer that most people associate with BOS. It’s the decentralized frontends where all code is stored on the NEAR blockchain, with files being uploaded to IPFS.

Gateways are simply access points that render the code stored on-chain to an end-user. In the future, gateways might be integrated into browsers and wallets and run by dApp and protocol teams.
Onboarding: Still one of the biggest challenges, but with FastAuth integrated, the BOS offers one of the smoothest onboarding experiences that anyone who has signed up for a traditional Web2 service will be familiar with.
The last remaining question now is, what can be built with the BOS, and how can I leverage it for my own projects?
<h3>What can be built on the BOS?</h3>
Everything built on the BOS exists in the form of components. These make it really easy to create a widget by simply forking existing components or directly tying them into your product.
<h4>Super dApps</h4>
Imagine Ref Finance wanted to expand its services to include borrowing and lending to become a DeFi super app. The Burrow team has already created a component facilitating borrowing and lending. Instead of having to develop it themselves, the Ref Finance team could simply integrate Burrow’s component.
Moreover, in this scenario, REF Finance wouldn’t have to worry about protocol changes on Burrow either, as long as the Burrow team themselves maintain its component.
<h4>Multichain dApps</h4>
dApps don’t have to be limited to one chain. Since BOS already works with EVM chains, there are many dApps to connect with. As an ETH holder, you can stake your ETH from the BOS with Lido, and if Canto is more your vibe, you can use Cantopia, deployed on the BOS, to swap some of your Canto Tokens.
Beyond that, developers can even provide users with easy access to multiple chains. This was recently demonstrated by Zavodil, who built a front-end that seamlessly grants users access to execute swaps on Ethereum, NEAR, and ZKSync.

While the above examples have been DeFi, there are many more opportunities to build Multichain dApps, from scaling DAOs across chains to doing fun things like using your NFT from one chain in another chain’s game or using the reputation you built up elsewhere in a new context.
As a crypto-native, you ultimately benefit from the BOS as it provides you with a unified interface to use your favourite dApps from all kinds of ecosystems. You also can more easily discover new dApps and never miss any critical updates thanks to the notification feature.
But the BOS isn’t built for just crypto natives. NEAR is aiming to onboard 1 billion people. That’s why BOS is creating a Web2-like experience combining it with all the best features of Web3. If using the Open Web becomes an easy alternative, why would you put up with Web2?
To facilitate the transition, future releases for the BOS will include private data that enables encryption that can only be decrypted by users or permissioned providers and a compliance engine to power enterprise adoption.
<h3>What does BOS mean for the Open Web?</h3>
Recently, the team at Proximity Labs wrote a great <a href="https://medium.com/@ProximityFi/bos-the-worlds-first-blockchain-operating-system-54042a77b546">article about the further implications of BOS</a>, highlighting some of the key benefits from decentralisation and security to censorship resistance and composability.
All of these features are phenomenal. That said, they might mean little for you as an individual as long as you live comfortably. So what does the BOS mean for you?
It really depends, but chances are, as a crypto native reading this, even if your goal is just for bags to go up, it’d be better if more people entered into the space. The BOS enables this by providing a unified interface for all existing protocols to build on.
The realisation of the Open Web has been held back by fragmentation, fighting over which network is the best, and a convoluted onboarding experience. The BOS, on the other hand, is chain-agnostic, anyone can integrate with it, and it seamlessly leverages fastAuth for onboarding.
Let’s explore this further using a few examples:
<h4>Iskra (gaming)</h4>
According to dApprader, Iskra has seen over 2.3 million unique active wallets in the past 30 days, making it the №1 used dApp for that period. Nevertheless, you might have yet to hear of it since it runs on Klaytn (which you might also never have heard of before). However, if integrated into the BOS, the casual gaming platform would benefit from increased discovery as people could easily filter by most active dApp, and distribution because everyone interacting with BOS could see it.
<h4>Orb dApp (social)</h4>
Lens Protocol, the social graph that generated quite some hype when the Aave team launched it, forms the backbone of Orb dApp. As a super dApp for decentralized social media, Orb app is a perfect candidate to leverage the BOS for ease of access and enable users to cross-post to various social media platforms without sacrificing privacy or a smooth user experience.
<h4>Gitcoin (crowdfunding)</h4>
As we’ve seen during recent Gitcoin grants rounds, gas fees on Ethereum ruin the experience and willingness of donors to support their favorite organisations. While some propose running Gitcoin as a dAppchain, we think the BOS could be a feasible way to allow donors to donate in whatever asset on EVM or NEAR (eventually any chain) they would like to, defaulting to a low-gas choice.
With components for swaps and bridging integrated, it seems feasible to abstract away any necessary swapping activity to provide supporters and those looking for grants with the best experience. Ultimately, we all win if we figure out how to<a href="https://medium.com/p/712511c6732a"> fund public goods efficiently and democratically</a>.
<h3>To Summarise</h3>
The BOS is the infrastructure realising the Open Web. It supports any blockchain and is the perfect interface for realising a multichain future.
By taking on hosting and storage, it’s not just a great choice for Web3 developers to quickly go to market, but it even provides a cost-efficient choice for Web2 companies. After all, the Open Web is open to anyone.

<h4>Introducing BOS: Blockchain Operating System</h4>
NEAR Protocol is evolving from a singular/enclosed/self-contained Layer 1 for smart contracts to the BOS: the Blockchain Operating System for all of Web 3.0.

BOS is a tech stack that allows developers to create, deploy, and store frontends in a secure and decentralized way, for any protocol on any chain. Currently, NEAR and EVM-compatible chains including Ethereum, Arbitrum, and Polygon are supported, with more to come in the future.
With BOS, NEAR can power decentralized frontends for all Web 3.0 applications, and act as a common layer for storing, browsing, and discovering products such as DEXs, money markets, NFT marketplaces, social networks, gaming platforms, and more. This technology enables NEAR to become the discovery layer for crypto users in the same way that Apple’s App Store is the discovery layer for iPhone users.

BOS is based on three pillars: Gateways, Components, and Blockchains.
Gateways
Gateways are access points to Web 3.0 apps that pull frontend code directly from the NEAR blockchain and render it for their users. A gateway consists of a specially designed virtual machine that loads and runs frontends for protocols built on Ethereum, L2s, and other Layer 1s like NEAR. In this way, they make locally-run, decentralized frontends available to the masses.
Anyone can create and run a gateway, and all of them can have different specializations. For example, <a href="http://alpha.near.org/">near.org</a> acts like an app store for dApps; <a href="https://near.social/#/">near social</a> offers a more social-oriented experience where users can engage with each other, access their favorite dApps, and even share their findings, interactions, and content; and <a href="https://bos.gg/#/">bos.gg</a> targets EVM dApp developers. For more examples of gateways, check out <a href="https://near.org/gateways">https://near.org/gateways</a>.

Users will be able to trade using AMMs or orderbooks, access different types of perps, money markets, or bridges, all within a single interface (see Figures 5 and 6). Additionally, use case specific apps like Sweatcoin can utilize gateways to expand their functionality, becoming “super apps” that bring DeFi access to millions of Web 2.0 users.

(Note: The image above is a prototype and should only be used as a reference, not as a representation of the actual product.)</figcaption></figure>Apart from these popular applications, like Ref or Sweatcoin, gateways can assume a variety of forms including wallets or portfolio management tools (e.g. Zerion, Pulsar, Zapper, or Debank). BOS enables them to add extra functionality such as execution, allowing their users to perform trades and interact directly with DeFi from these products.
If protocol teams use BOS and keep their components updated, then gateways can rely on these components for their native integrations (and simply add some CSS/design to them rather than implement themselves). This provides an important solution for the common issue of portfolio management teams having to drop native integrations because they can’t keep up with numerous native protocol changes.
Components
Components are frontends for app-layer protocols (think Lido, Uniswap, Aave), whose source codes is stored entirely on-chain. The code for these apps can be viewed in a gateway, similar to viewing a smart contract on <a href="https://etherscan.io/">Etherscan</a>. In the Ref Finance gateway example above, the Figure showed various apps — these are all components built using BOS, which are the frontends interacting with the respective protocol’s backend.

A decentralized frontend for Lido Finance, built using BOS, natively stored on NEAR.</figcaption></figure>One of the main advantages is that developers can fork these apps and deploy their own versions, or even compose different Components together. For example, many components showing prices of swaps across many different chains, could all be displayed side by side in a single comparison interface component. The author of this component need not develop all the underlying swap components, but rather compose them into their “super app” component.
Blockchains
The true power of BOS comes from the fact that it is chain-agnostic. Components can call functions on any blockchain, with BOS currently supporting all EVM chains/L2s and NEAR. The source code for the apps (frontends) is on NEAR, due to its ability to cheaply store HTML/CSS/JS (a few cents).
<h4>BOS: Benefits &amp; Use Cases</h4>
BOS aims to tackle several critical challenges around building frontends for Web 3.0 apps, including access, security, composability, and time to market.
Decentralization and Security
With BOS, the code for Components is always on-chain, making it auditable, versioned, and viewable in explorers. All component code is stored on the NEAR blockchain. This enhances security and robustness, while providing strong uptime and access guarantees.
Back in August, the popular dApp Curve <a href="https://decrypt.co/107120/ethereum-defi-exchange-curve-frontend-hack-hijack">suffered a frontend hack</a> that allowed hackers to steal ~$570,000. Hackers compromised the Curve website and domain name to redirect unwitting users (or their transactions) to a malicious destination. BOS would have stopped this from happening, and any attempt of malicious interaction would have been spotted on-chain. Examples like these prove the need for a secure and decentralized frontend stored natively on-chain.
Since the source code for BOS components can be verified both on-chain and in-browser, this attack is more likely to have been spotted. And if the user was running their gateway locally, it would have been impossible.

Censorship Resistance
Frontends stored in centralized servers such as AWS or GCP are a centralized point of failure that run counter to decentralization and the promise of crypto in general. BOS solves this problem by decentralizing the frontends and thus making them as censorship resistant as the underlying NEAR protocol itself.
Open source and Composability
Building frontends with BOS means that frontend code is public and more compatible with open source principles by default. In the same way that developers could access the code of a certain DeFi app and fork it to create a new one (with different branding and maybe added features), now developers can also access frontends and fork them to be used in several applications via BOS. Let’s further understand this with Lido as an example.
As you can see in Figure 7, Lido’s backend smart contracts can now be accessed through a decentralized frontend deployed using BOS. This opens the door to customization and enhanced UIs for users: for example, devs would be able to create new components to improve the UI of other dApps (e.g. include charts and analytics in the Lido UI). It is much easier and quicker as they can leverage built-ins such as profiles, payments, and notifications as well as searching, without the need to host anything themselves.
Users might decide to use this frontend instead of the official one. And anyone can create one as long as the smart contract code is open source. That also allows users to keep using the application even if the official, non-decentralized frontend is compromised or down due to AWS problems, improving robustness, security, as well as user empowerment.
Furthermore, BOS fosters <a href="https://medium.com/@ProximityFi/enabling-cross-chain-composability-how-near-protocols-nightshade-will-disrupt-defi-3922d52c840c">composability</a> by enabling developers to reuse and remix Components, and improve the UI of DeFi apps thanks to the decentralized and open source nature. Composability is one of the things that DeFi has leveraged the most: token swaps, flash loans, LP positions as collateral, etc. Thanks to BOS, composability is also coming to frontends. For example, devs can integrate components that were created for Uniswap into Lido, or components that were created for Aave into dYdX, if they decide to enable any money market feature. Components can be reassembled, modified, duplicated, or integrated in any way into other Components or frontends, opening the door to more sophisticated applications catering to different needs and experiences.

Seamless Onboarding
For DeFi to achieve mass adoption, UI/UX for DeFi applications need to be improved. The current landscape, characterized by numerous blockchains, applications, infrastructure, and wallets, along with fragmented liquidity, can be daunting for newcomers to DeFi. BOS seeks to establish itself as a unifying layer for discovering Web 3.0 offerings. We foresee the development of all-in-one applications (aka “Super Apps”) on BOS that integrate popular dAcurvecurpps such as DEXs, money markets, NFT marketplaces, and liquidity staking protocols, across various blockchains. By also enabling users to sign up without a seed phrase, using only their device through Fast Auth (just announced at Consensus!), BOS aims to substantially reduce entry barriers and make Web 3.0 more accessible.
Developer Experience
BOS offers a nimble approach to prototyping and constructing frontend applications. This enables developers to concentrate on coding while avoiding the hassle of establishing infrastructure and managing servers. Additionally, BOS facilitates a unified platform for collaboration and code-sharing among developers, enabling the option to relinquish ownership and create immutable components. With its utilization of JavaScript and ReactJS, developers can easily get started with a minimal learning curve. For example, the <a href="https://bos.gg/#/zavodil.near/widget/Lido">Lido</a> component on BOS was completed in two hours.
<h4>Roadmap</h4>
With the main BOS gateway (near.org), meta-transactions, and zero-balance accounts live, and FastAuth announced at Consensus2023, BOS is well on its path to mass adoption.
In the near future, you can look forward to further features such as the compliance engine, private data, on-chain and encrypted chat service, account extensions and remote accounts. Stay tuned also for upcoming partnership announcements and the unique product experiences they will beget.
